On July 22, the Museum hosted a debate entitled “Shechita-Halal. On Ritual Slaughter”, with a panel that included the Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich, Dr. Paweł Borecki (an expert on religious law from the University of Warsaw), Dr. Aneta Wiewiórkowska (an expert on European law from the Leon Koźmiński Academy), Prof. Jan Woleński (a philosopher from the Jagiellonian University) and Dariusz Gzyra, the president of the "Empathy" Association.
The discussion was moderated by Adam Szostkiewicz of the Polityka weekly.
We heard expert opinions on ritual slaughter in the context of religious law, Polish law and EU regulations. Then, the rabbi and the opponents of ritual slaughter presented their views. Those on every side of the debate had an opportunity to calmly make their case.
The panelists touched on issues relating to religion, tradition, ethics and economy. A large audience was given a chance to offer statements and engage the panelists in a discussion. By organizing public debates on current social issues the Museum attempts to establish a platform for dialogue, where all parties involved can meet, express their opinions, listen to others and seek compromise.
A POLISH-LANGUAGE RECORDING OF THE DEBATE IS AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD IN MP3 FORMAT
