We cordially invite you to presentations and lectures by staff of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews taking place within the framework of the 23rd Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow.

July 6, 12 p.m.: "Encounters with Modernity". Presentation of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews 19th century gallery

Presentation of the 19th century gallery, which forms a part of the Museum’s Core Exhibition currently under construction. The presentation will be delivered by Dr. Renata Piątkowska (Curator of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews collection) and Anna Mizera (Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland), and preceded by an introduction by Prof. Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, Program Director of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews Core Exhibition (introduction in English with Polish translation).

The 19th century gallery tells the story of how the Jewish community entered the modern period, which transformed and altered the social, religious and economic life of Jews in Central and Eastern Europe. Daily life and culture changed as new forms of Jewish social life appeared – a Jewish intelligentsia and proletariat emerged next to the middle class. The narration of the gallery is an attempt to describe how Jews acted faced with the challenges of modernity, including new rights, industrialization, urbanization, migrations and secularization, how they adapted to these changes, the ways they sought and those they considered in order to remain faithful to their roots as they reshaped themselves and their lives.
