Discussion “Remembrance of Minorities. Is it worthy to build museums?”
What is the role of museums dealing with histories, cultures and traditions of minorities? Are there many places like that in Poland? What are their experiences? Who do they address their offer to? Are there plans to build successive museums of the kind? What is the opinion of the representatives of minorities and migrants on the idea of building such museums?
Several days before the opening of the Core Exhibition at our Museum, we invite general public to take part in a discussion during which we want to create a space for reflection on the role of museums dealing with minorities and on the idea of creating such institutions.
The participants of the discussion will be:
Luiza Adajewa – director of the Refugee Self-Help Centre Sintar which focuses on preserving Chechen culture, language and tradition. She has stayed in Poland as an immigrant since 2000. She continues the work of her husband, Issa Adajew, who died two years ago and who was a general manager of museums in Chechnya and whose wish was to preserve the perishing Chechen culture.
Andrzej Grzymała-Kozłowski – a graduate of political science at the University of Warsaw, a Roma expert and a traveller. For almost 20 years connected with the Roma Community through friendly relations and personal contacts. He is a co-author of the government project Program for Roma Community in Poland.
Anna Akbike Sulimowicz – a turkologist, lecturer at the Department of Turkology and Peoples of Central Asia Faculty of Oriental Studies of the University of Warsaw, a translator of Turkish literature.
The moderator of the discussion will be Dr Antoni Bartosz – Director of the Ethnographic Museum in Krakow.
October 13th, at 6.00 p.m. – 7.30 p.m., The Museum of the History of Polish Jews, 6, Anielewicza St., discussion interpreted into English, admittance free.
