Rozental Archives

In the second half of June 2023, we finalised the acceptance of the archival collections of the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, the so-called Rozental Archive, from Ms. Paula Sawicka. This collection is a unique and invaluable historical source showing how Jews helped one another during the Holocaust.

Helena and Adolf Rozental, who lived in Bern, organised and provided assistance to Jews during World War II - living in ghettos and hiding on the Aryan side. It was a campaign to send "watches and parcels" to Poland. The recipients of the parcels confirmed their receipt by sending letters to the Rozentals, which, in addition to expressions of gratitude and thanks, contained information about their current living situation and their most urgent needs.

The Rozentals gathered information documenting help in letters sent from occupied Poland to Bern, Switzerland. Thanks to the archives, we can find out what the help provided to Jews looked like, which often influenced their lives. We learn about how they passed information and shared their experiences, created formal networks within underground organisations or informal networks of support among family members, friends and even complete strangers.

The Rozental Archive consists of a collection of approximately 800 letters sent from occupied Poland to Bern and dated mailing lists for each batch of parcels with annotations about the received confirmations, as well as very carefully kept correspondence of the Rozentals with mailing houses and banks, correspondence seeking financing for the campaign, conscientiously kept accounts, as well as correspondence with people who were looking for their families in occupied Poland or who wanted to help them through the Rozentals. All documentation is kept in Polish (mostly all private letters), German, French, Portuguese and English.

This rich material will serve many purposes - exhibitions, research, publishing, and education.

The depositary of the archive and co-author of the scientific research conducted on the collection is Ms. Paula Sawicka.

As part of cooperation in the care of the Rozental Archive, the POLIN Museum undertook the compilation of the records, its conservation and digitization with a view to future online access.
