In September, we opened a new temporary exhibition at POLIN Museum titled "Gdynia – Tel Aviv," devoted to the two cities built on a dream.
Both cities were established at the same time as seaports - gates to the world, elegant summer resorts and pearls of modernist architecture. Both played similar roles in the history of Israel and Poland. You will see the photos and architectural models of the most beautiful buildings, documents recording daily life and holidays, artefacts from the interwar period and artworks by contemporary artists.
The exhibition is available for viewing from 13 September 2019 until 3 February 2020.
We invite you to a thematic guided tour of the core exhibition and the temporary exhibition "Gdynia – Tel Aviv."
We will discover a phenomenon of the two cities during a guided tour of the selected galleries of the core exhibition and the temporary exhibition "Gdynia – Tel Aviv." We will analyse the similarities and differences between them.
We will talk about how Poles and Jews imagined the reconstruction and functioning of their own independent states. We will get acquainted with politicians, engineers and architects planning the two modern cities. We will see how they made their dream projects come true by building ports and residential districts of Tel Aviv and Gdynia.
Both Tel Aviv, „the first Hebrew city”, established in 1909, and Gdynia („Polish gate to the world”), whose construction began in 1919, were dominated by modernist architecture. Thanks to the original photographs from that period, we will trace the stages of construction of the two “white cities.” Architectural models of the selected buildings will reveal their structural details.
The tour is recommended for visitors aged 14 and up.
The tour takes place once a month: October 2019 – January 2020.
We invite groups of adults and high school pupils for guided tours of the temporary exhibition "Gdynia - Tel Aviv."
Construction of Tel Aviv commenced in 1909. The founders of the city envisaged it as the first modern Jewish metropolis. Gdynia on the other hand, built in the 1920s, was the realization of a Polish dream of modernity. Both cities are located on the coast, both were inhabited by new settlers—dreamers eager to build “a new brave world” from scratch.
The architecture of both cities is modernist, reflecting the most current trend in the European architecture at the time. It was dominated by plain forms and white facades contrasted with the blue of the sea and the curcuma yellow of the sun and sand. The new style was described as follows: “the white cities of tomorrow can be seen through the wide, bright windows of a twentieth-century house.”
School youth along with the guide will talk about the challenges faced by the young Polish state. They will ponder on why it was so vital for the politicians to build a large seaport on the Baltic. In case of Tel Aviv, they will discuss Zionism — the guide will talk about the people whose goal was to build their own state on the lands historically and religiously connected with the Jewish nation.
