How Hard It Is to Be a King

Janusz Korczak, Iwona Chmielewska How Hard It Is to Be a King

Is it easy to govern? How is it done, what for, and for whom? How to organize a state to make its residents happy? —the protagonist of Janusz Korczak’s novel King Matt the First strives to seek answers to such questions. While working on the novel many years ago, Korczak - together with the children - pondered the toils and responsibilities borne by those in power.

The book How Hard It Is to Be a King is based on selected fragments of King Matt the First with a superb graphic interpretation by Iwona Chmielewska. Korczak stressed that fostering our “inner child” enables us to retain a fresh and pure outlook on life, and that children are fully-fledged citizens and participants of the social life. He wanted them to believe in themselves and to remember that “one must not leave the world the way it is.” This book aims to remind us about that. It ensures valuable reading for both children and adults.
