International Holocaust Remembrance Day
On January 27 we mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
81 years ago Soviet soldiers opened the gates of Auschwitz-Birkenau, liberating seven thousand prisoners. Every year, in memory of this event, former prisoners, representatives of government and of various religious denominations meet inside the grounds of the former camp at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 2005. Its purpose is to keep alive the memory of the Holocaust and to educate people around the world about the Shoah as a warning against the effects of hate, racism and prejudice.
