The Crooked Mirror. A Memoir of Polish-Jewish Reconciliation

In winter of 2000, at the invitation of her Zen rabbi, writer Louise Steinman attended a Bearing Witness Retreat at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Her research into the past led her then to Radomsk, the city of her grandparents, whose eighteen thousand Jews were deported or shot during the Nazi occupation. Returning time and again to Poland over the course of a decade, visiting numerous Polish towns. Steinman encounters people who devoted their lives to the process of Polish-Jewish reconciliation. Together they rediscover the seemingly lost past of the Jewish communities in Poland.

The meeting at POLIN Museum will be dedicated to Steinman’s book, „The Crooked Mirror. A Memoir of Polish-Jewish Reconciliation”. Together with Tomasz Kitliński, a philosopher and a social activist, Steinman will discuss various dimensions of the contemporary Polish-Jewish dialogue, and reflect on what we can do in order to popularize newly rediscovered stories about our common history.

April 15, 6:00 p.m.

The meeting will be held in English and translated into Polish.
