The situation in Syria

The armed conflict in Syria began in 2011, leading to a political and economic upheaval across the country. Today, the number of people in need of humanitarian aid is about 13,5 million. The intense military clashes have forced more than 10,5 million Syrians to abandon their homes. According to the United Nations report, more than half of them are children.
The prolonged armed conflict has brought about one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the modern world. The situation in Syria remains dire, with insufficient food supplies and dramatic increase in prices. Families who chose to escape from the conflict zone continue to huddle in tents or among the rubble, their only belongings being the items they have managed to take along as they fled. The country suffers from a shortage of drinking water and sanitary facilities; 25% of all schools have closed while healthcare services are severely limited.

The activities of the Polish Humanitarian Action in Syria

The mission of the Polish Humanitarian Action in Syria maintains operation in 50 camps for internally displaced persons in the Idlib and Aleppo provinces, providing aid in a systematic manner to approximately 35,000 people.
2,147 evacuees from Aleppo have made it to the camps for internally displaced persons where the Polish Humanitarian Action maintains its operations. The employees of the Polish Humanitarian Action mission in Syria provide the new arrivals with almost 43,000 litres of water per day.
According to the report of the UN OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations) dated 23 December, nearly 54,000 people were evacuated from Aleppo between 15-22 December. The Polish Humanitarian Action is ready to welcome more refugees as they arrive. The rapid response of the Polish Humanitarian Action was made possible owing to the widespread interest amongst the Polish society – donations from private individuals and companies as well as grassroots fundraising campaigns organised by groups of friends, co-workers, musicians and academics as well as by schools, theatres and restaurants.
Since March 2013, the Polish Humanitarian Action has been providing aid on a day-to-day basis to those in need in the war-torn country, facilitating access to fresh water, food, shelter and medical assistance for thousands of people. The employees of the Polish Humanitarian Action in Syria provide the refugees with drinking water, food packets, hygienic articles, blankets, mattresses, tents and medicines; in addition, they perform repairs of water supply systems, bathrooms and lavatories at schools. They implement and enhance waste management systems and deliver flour and yeast to bakeries, allowing them to maintain prices of bread at an affordable level. In 2016, the organisation has managed to extend its support to approximately half a million people in the Idlib and Aleppo provinces.
