Bestia (The Polish Dancer, 1917), dir. Aleksander Hertz

The only film with Pola Negri made in Poland surviving in full. A typical melodrama, in which the world of the upper classes mingles with that of the Warsaw demi-monde.
Pola, a girl from a “good family” spends her time in the company of “Apaches” (hooligans), including her boyfriend Dymitr. After a fight with her parents, she runs away from home. In a hotel, she gets her boyfriend drunk, takes his money and abandons him. She begins a new, self-sufficient life as a model and dancer in a cabaret, where she meets a wealthy, married businessman, Aleksy.

Marcin Masecki – has received several awards as a composer, jazz and classical pianist; associated with the label Lado ABC. He has worked with Tomasz Stańko, Andrzej Jagodziński and Michał Urbaniak, and recorded several albums, including solo ones. His most recent release are “Polonaises” for a ten-person brass orchestra.

Summer entertainment with a grain of nostalgia for a vanished world: the theatrical gestures of Pola Negri in Bestia, the surprising plot of An Unknown Soldier’s Grave, sudden love, which needs to overcome an array of obstacles in The Cult of the Body, and the moral dilemmas of the Strong Man, capable of committing a crime in order to obtain fame.

The pre-war Polish film industry would not exist without artists of Jewish origin. Unfortunately most of their films have been lost. Today, we can only see a handful of the silent masterpieces of Aleksander Hertz, Ryszard Ordyński, Michał Waszyński and Henryk Szaro. In July, we will bring these films back to life, accompanied by great live music.
